BMI (Body Mass Index) is a screening tool using height and weight. It does not measure body fat directly but helps flag underweight or excess weight risks.
BMI formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
Example: 70 kg, 1.75 m → BMI = 70 / (1.75×1.75) ≈ 22.9 (normal range).
Adult categories (WHO)
- Below 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 — Normal
- 25 – 29.9 — Overweight
- 30+ — Obese
Limitations
Athletes with high muscle mass may show high BMI without excess fat. Consult a doctor for personal health advice.
